The 99 Invocations

Remembering my fitra. Returning to my original state. Living its qualities.

Each Name recalls a quality of the state I was created in, before fear and duality drew me farther from my fitra and the Source. What am I remembering in myself? How can that quality return through my mind, body, soul and polarity, and become part of the way I live?

The Names as remembrance of my fitra

Fitra is your original state: the wholeness in which Allah created you, with the capacity for mercy, clarity, strength and receptivity. The work is remembrance of that original coherence and your connection with the Source, the origin from which your life and its qualities arise.

Duality here is the felt split that pulls apart what belongs together: strength from tenderness, action from receiving, your inward truth from the life you express. Fear and learned separation can deepen that distance from fitra and the Source. Each Name recalls a quality of your original state and gives it a way back into your experience.

Dhikr is remembrance: returning attention to that original connection. Remembrance becomes character when you invoke mercy, for example, then meet a real mistake with tenderness and repair. The heart is a mirror: your inward capacity to recognize a quality and express it. Clearing the mirror means seeing through the fear or demand for approval that has obscured it.

Beauty names the tenderness, intimacy and generosity that open the heart. Majesty names the dignity, truth and firm boundary that give life a rightful form. Mercy with a backbone is one example of their meeting. Each Name offers a different doorway into this work; the effect you seek is a quality made more available in your actual life.

My polarity is the relationship between my electric direction—acting, deciding and expressing—and my magnetic direction—receiving, feeling and allowing. Force without receptivity hardens; receptivity without direction loses its boundary. Sukun is the still center that can hold both. Istiqama is returning to that alignment through lived choices. This is Estaqimu’s metaphysical language for inner movement.

The inner work and the science

The inward purpose is to remember fitra, restore connection with the Source and let an original quality become available in your life again. The tradition connects remembrance with the heart finding rest. Qur’an 13:28 ↗

The practice also engages processes that can be studied. Repeatedly returning attention is a trainable skill; one randomized meditation study found improved attentional control after five days compared with relaxation training. Attention study ↗Naming an actual feeling has laboratory evidence: affect labeling reduced amygdala response to negative images in an fMRI experiment. Emotion-naming study ↗

Voice and breathing can interact with bodily rhythm. A study of 23 healthy adults found that rhythmic rosary and mantra recitation organized breathing and cardiovascular oscillations. Rhythmic-recitation study ↗Here, let breathing remain easy and unforced. Notice your actual response rather than aiming for a required sensation or respiratory rate.

These studies support shared mechanisms of practice; they did not test these 99 readings or a distinct biological effect for each Name. The individual mind, body and soul passages describe the direction of the work and what to observe. Electric and magnetic describe Estaqimu’s inner polarity; they do not assign a measured bodily charge or a frequency to a Name.

How I use a Name

Find a quality that meets a real situation. Name the feeling and need, invoke with attention, and follow the entry’s specific practice. Observe what happens in thought, sensation and conduct. Carry the quality into one act, then review what changed and what still needs care. Repetition serves presence; this reference sets no universal count or automatic sequence.
